Recently, the cut slot raise boring machine manufactured by Maitong Intelligent has finished the construction of a 13° upward pilot hole backfill shaft at the Hebei Hua’ao Mining project. This construction technology marks a pioneering achievement in China’s mining industry, with Maitong once again breaking through high-difficulty industry barriers via technological innovation.
This project presented extremely challenging working conditions. Unlike standard vertical raise construction, the site required upward drilling of pilot holes at an inclination of 13° for underground backfill operations. Inclined upward drilling is prone to hole deviation, unbalanced stress on drill rods and poor slag removal, imposing stringent requirements on equipment structural stability, trajectory control accuracy and hydraulic load capacity. Prior to this project, there were no mature practical cases of mechanized construction for this application nationwide.

After receiving the project requirements, Maitong Intelligent’s technical team optimized drilling processes and adjusted equipment operating parameters tailored to the site’s geological conditions and construction design specifications, and formulated a dedicated safe construction plan. Leveraging the high-precision guiding control system and stable hydraulic drive system of its cut slot raise boring machine, the equipment operated smoothly within narrow and complex underground roadways, accurately controlled drilling trajectories, and successfully completed the 13° inclined upward pilot hole construction.

The successful application of this technology fills the domestic technical gap in mechanized construction of inclined upward backfill shafts. While ensuring underground construction safety, it drastically shortens construction periods and cuts overall construction costs, offering a brand-new mechanized solution for similar unconventional-inclination shaft projects across China.
